Is there still a chance for the ‘Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spin-off?

The final season of Game of Thrones faced backlash, leading HBO to reconsider their spin-off plans. A Naomi Watts-led spin-off was scrapped, and the Lord Corlys Velaryon-centered show, ‘9 Voyages,’ was put on hold. However, fans have been eagerly awaiting a spin-off centered on Jon Snow. But is it still in the works?

HBO initially announced the Jon Snow spin-off in 2022, with Kit Harrington hinting at his return. It was considered a high-priority project, but as time passed, doubts arose among executives and showrunners about its realization.

During an interview with Deadline, HBO Drama Chief Francesca Orsi expressed uncertainty about the spin-off’s future. She explained that they are working closely with the writers to shape the project for potential approval but haven’t made a final decision.

Game Of Thrones Star Kit Harington Shares His Thoughts On House Of The Dragon

Given the mixed reception of the later seasons of Game of Thrones, HBO is cautious about expanding the franchise too quickly. Quality is now a top priority, and they do not want to risk tarnishing one of their biggest brands with a subpar spin-off.

On the other hand, House of the Dragon, the one spin-off that did make it to the screen, has been a success. The first season received critical acclaim, and the finale garnered impressive viewership. This shows that the demand for the franchise still exists, and Jon Snow remains a beloved character with immense popularity.

Jon Snow was seen as the closest thing to a hero in Game of Thrones, and his scenes often became iconic moments. His character holds significant potential for further exploration, as Kit Harrington mentioned during a convention. There is still plenty of room to delve into Jon Snow’s trauma and growth.

So, while there is uncertainty surrounding the Jon Snow spin-off, the franchise’s popularity and the character’s appeal leave the possibility open for its development. HBO will continue to assess the project’s potential and prioritize quality to ensure they do justice to one of their most significant brands.

“He’s gotta go back up to the place with all this history and live out his life thinking about how he killed Dany,” the actor explained. “And live out his life thinking about Ygritte dying in his arms, and live out his life thinking about how he hung Olly, and live out his life thinking about all of this trauma, and that … that’s interesting.”

While nothing has been green-lit, the fact that HBO hasn’t completely shut down the Jon Snow spin-off, as they’ve done with countless other Thrones projects, is a positive sign. All we can do is hope.
