Happy 20th Birthday ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’

Happy 20th Birthday Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

It’s been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (originally Sorcerer’s Stone) was released in the United Kingdom. What started as an idea in 1990 has now become a global phenomena, spawning eight films and two theme parks. To think that the initial publication of the book was only 500 copies. The book didn’t find its way over to the United States until September 1, 1998 (an appropriate date as that’s the start of term). Since then, it has been translated into 67 different languages.

Harry Potter sparked a generation of dreamers. I don’t know of another book series that has had quite the same effect on the world as Harry Potter. This series is one that transcends age, appealing to both children and adults, the message and themes sticking with you your entire life.

I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my dad as he read the book to me before bed. It became a sort of tradition for him to read me Harry Potter, up until the fourth book because I got impatient. I remember dressing up in the Slytherin robes my grandmother made me to go to the midnight release of books six and seven. Then my friends and I would stay up all night reading.

Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for introducing the world to the boy who lived 20 years ago.
