Grey’s Anatomy Recap: You Can Look (But You’d Better Not Touch)

If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, you know that with every second of every episode comes the opportunity for disaster. It is, after all, a medical drama. However, for every moment of disaster, there’s an opportunity for hope as well, even if it’s not in the way you’d originally expect. For the last 13 seasons, fans have watched a group of doctors as they made it through ups and downs in their careers, personal lives, and relationships. These ups and downs have led to a sort of family within the characters and cast but also the viewers at home.

When the series returned after it’s mid-season hiatus, fans were anxiously awaiting the fate of two of their favorite characters, as well as the emotional well-being of many others. However, they were thrown into an episode that didn’t focus at all on what they expected. Instead, it told the story of a pregnant inmate in maximum security prison who would change things up for three of our favorite doctors.

The young woman, Kristen, who’s story remains untold, had a baby in her womb what she referred to as a  ‘vampire baby’ who was stealing its nutrients. The plan was to make sure her baby would be safe enough as it was to carry to term or carry out a procedure if necessary to ensure her safety and health. As the episode progressed you learned that Kristen was angry, prone to outbursts, and also – that she was misunderstood. As the doctors who were afraid of her first, began to know her story, they saw her in a different light – each one that was reminiscent of their own journey.

The episode also led viewers to wonder if Jo was pregnant with Alex’s baby, especially after a few moments between her and the patient, as well as some comment she made. We won’t know the fate of Jo and Alex’s relationship or what’s in store for either of them until the upcoming episodes air but this specific episode definitely laid groundwork for some big changes to show up on the horizon, and some emotional ones at that.

Perhaps that was the purpose of the episode in its entirety. Instead of having our questions answered and the loose ends tied up from the midseason finale, we were met with another story altogether. The doctors from Seattle Grace, each dealing with hardships of their own; each worried about their loved ones, were taken out of their own worry and concern and thrown into a situation they had no idea how to navigate, and somehow, they triumphed.

Maybe the point was to foreshadow what to expect from the rest of the season, we won’t always get the answers we expect in the way that we expect them; but if we leave the opportunities we come across open for interpretation, we’ll learn more than we ever could have imagined.

While the previews for the next episode do show a focus on Alex Karev’s fate, we’re left to wonder now just what other obstacles will be encountered as the season progresses. With a show like Greys Anatomy where no one is safe, will this be the season that breaks us all?
