‘Game of Thrones’ Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Talks About the Shocking Cliffhanger Ending to ‘The Spoils of War’

Warning: This article is dark and full of spoilers!  DO NOT read on if you are not caught up with Season 7 of Game of Thrones!

'Game of Thrones' Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Talks About the Shocking Cliffhanger Ending to 'The Spoils of War'

Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones delivered the biggest shock of the season so far.  Jaime and the Lannister army were caught off guard by Danaerys and her dragons and, well, for lack of a better phrase, they were burnt to a crisp.  Seriously.  The whole army was pretty much roasted and those who weren’t fell to the Dothraki.  It was insane!

The epic battle came to a head when Bronn shot down Drogon from the sky with Danaerys on his back.  The dragon landed safely but was clearly injured and hurt pretty badly.  As Danaerys tried to remove the stake from Drogon’s wing, Jaime Lannister threw up a Hail Mary and started riding full speed directly at Danaerys.  Once Drogon saw Jaime riding straight at them, he poised himself to protect his mother and breath a heaping, hot fireball directly at Jaime.  At the last second, Bronn tackles Jaime out of the fiery path and they both fall into the deep water.  The episode ends as we see Jaime quickly sinking to the bottom of a pond, overcome by the weight of his armor.

WHAT?!  Did that really just happen?  Does this mean that Jaime is dead?  Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays Jaime Lannister spoke with Entertainment Weekly regarding his character’s uncertain fate after The Spoils of War.

First, Coster-Waldau spoke about the disappointing display in battle from the Lannister army:

“Even though Daenerys is the hero and the Lannisters are the villains, being burned alive is not great.  It’s a terrifying thing when this monster flamethrower comes along and incinerates thousands and thousands of men who are just doing their job.”

“Monster flamethrower” is a pretty good way of describing those incredible dragons!  What makes this battle even more interesting is that actual fire was used during this scene.  Earlier in the year, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss teased that season 7 broke a record for setting the most stuntmen on fire and, well, that was this scene.  73 fire burns and 20 people were set on fire for that epic episode conclusion.

So with a monster flamethrower dragon breathing fire all over lines and lines of troops, what in the world was Jaime thinking when he rode straight at the beast?  According to Coster-Waldau, maybe he wasn’t really thinking all that much.  He said:

“Jaime is such an idiot that he thinks for a second, ‘If I can do this, I can win the whole thing in a Hail Mary.”

And where did that get him?  Sinking to the bottom of an unrealistically deep watering hole.  So, what does this mean for Jaime Lannister?  Of course, Coster-Waldau wouldn’t comment directly on the fate of his character but, he did say the following:

“It’s not going to end well for Jaime Lannister, I can’t imagine.”

Personally, as a Jaime Lannister fan, I was hoping for him to turn over a new leaf.  It seemed like it was just about time for Jaime to stand up to Cersei and maybe even be the one to finally take her down.  Now, we’re just left wondering if he is even still alive!

What do you think?  Can Jaime make it out of this one?  Will he be the one to kill Cersei?  What did you think of that crazy battle scene?  Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below and, also below, check out some awesome behind-the-scenes footage from Sunday’s episode.
