He’s back, and he wants to play!

Earlier this week, MGM and Orion Pictures officially announced that production had kicked off on their upcoming Child’s Play reboot. The film started its production in Vancouver and will star Aubrey Plaza (LegionParks and Recreation), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out, American Gothic).

Just one day later, the studios have revealed the very first look at the terrorizing demon doll. The doll looks strikingly similar to the original version of Chucky first introduced in 1988. In the below first look, you can see the doll’s signature red hair, freckles, iconic striped shirt, and overalls. In general, the face of the doll looks ever-so-slightly different, but not by much.

The film will be a contemporary reimagining of the original franchise and will follow Karen (Plaza), a mother who gives her son Andy (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

CR: MGM and Orion Pictures

Filmmaker Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) is on board to direct with a script was written by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury). David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith will produce under their KatzSmith Productions banner.

The upcoming remake from MGM and Orion Pictures will be completely separate from the still-thriving original Child’s Play franchise from Don Mancini. The original Child’s Play franchise currently consists of 7 feature films, each one evolving the characters more and more, so it will be interesting to compare the upcoming remake to the franchise universe.

Additionally, it has been confirmed that legendary actor Brad Dourif, who has been voicing the role of Chucky for nearly 30 years, will not be involved with the remake production. Dourif, however, will be reprising the role once again for Mancini’s upcoming television series based on the Chucky character.
