Dwayne Johnson May Be the Only Reason There is a ‘Moana’ Live-Action Remake, as Original Moana Actress Isn’t Returning

The inevitability of a Moana remake was confirmed when Disney announced the project, just six and a half years after the original film’s release. However, eyebrows were raised at the timing. The puzzle began to fit together when it was revealed that Dwayne Johnson would not only produce the film but reprise his role as Maui. This revelation not only highlighted Johnson’s reluctance to venture beyond his established screen persona but also hinted at his ego being a driving force behind the remake.

Moana

Consider this: the longer it took for Moana to be remade, the less likely it would be for The Rock, now 51, to portray Maui convincingly. Films like Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan all received live-action adaptations decades after their original releases. This led to a theory that Johnson’s influence propelled the entire existence of the Moana remake, an idea supported by 22-year-old Auliʻi Cravalho confirming her absence from the on-camera involvement.

Considering Johnson’s recent box office disappointments with DC League of Super-Pets and Black Adam, followed by his unexpected return to a franchise he claimed to have no intention of revisiting, the theory doesn’t seem far-fetched. It’s plausible to suggest that Johnson pushed for the swift production of the Moana remake, ensuring he could reprise one of his most beloved roles and guarantee a blockbuster success with his name prominently featured in the marketing.
