DOOM Series Making a Possible Return

It appears that a new entry in id Software’s beloved first-person shooter series, DOOM, may be under development. The newest entry in the series, DOOM Eternal, was released in the early part of 2020. Since then, id Software has released two additional expansions for Eternal that appeared to put the DOOM franchise on hold. However, if a new job posting is anything to go by, the next game in the series appears to be in development.

Spotted by XboxWorlds, a recent job for the position of a Combat Designer at id Software was posted on the ZeniMax website. Details of what this role might entail were sparse at this time, but id Software did make it clear that they would be developing another “first-person action” game, much as we have come to anticipate from the studio in the past. In addition, it was also specified that those applying to the position should have, “In depth knowledge of recent id games, including DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.” Given that id Software is searching for candidates to be “very familiar” with the franchise, this may suggest that another DOOM game is in development.

But, on the other hand, there’s always a chance that this work could be connected to something else entirely and have nothing to do with DOOM. After all, id Software’s last two significant releases outside of a few services provided on Rage 2 were DOOM and DOOM Eternal. As a result, the firm may simply be looking for someone who has worked on similar projects in the past. Nothing has been announced about DOOM’s future in the months since, but this job posting has certainly piqued our curiosity.

What are your thoughts on the future of the DOOM series? Do you think id Software should continue to develop another game in the series for its next release, or should it try something new? Please share your own thoughts about this in the comments area below.
