Robert Pattinson on Twilight: He Almost lost the Role and he Holds no Resentment Towards Playing Edward

Sometimes in the entertainment industry; an actor or actress, musician or band, artist or athlete, or anyone else has a start or a ‘big break’ that they grow to resent as their career path takes off. They’ve got that ’embarrassing’ role or song or moment and at the time, it was everything they could have hoped for, however, something happens and it’s suddenly a blip on an otherwise positive career.

A lot of the time, these celebrities will try to avoid talking about those moments or laugh them off and move along, but some celebrities embrace them knowing that their lives may be much different without them. Even if things have moved in a totally different direction.

It’s not like he could have walked away from the role of Edward Cullen, but he does realize that he did take on that role, and even if it wasn’t what he wanted to do for his entire career; it was huge for him.

I think one of the best things, basically, about being a bit of a sellout, is if you’ve done five movies in a series, you’ve had to accept some responsibility for playing the same character.

Robert believes that the first film he worked on after Twilight that was of more substance was the 2010 film Cosmopolis. He says it was: ‘The first time I worked on something that was quite complex.’

However, he does love that Twilight came out during the height of his acting career, the saga made waves worldwide and it did a lot for him in terms of putting Robert on the map.

I especially love the fact that it came out really at the height of my popularity.’

He also says that the role was something he didn’t have to suck up for. ‘It was amazing luck, as well, to just have fallen into it with the group of people I worked with on it. I didn’t have to kiss anybody’s rear end the entire time.

While he wasn’t sucking up during his time as Edward Cullen, he did nearly lose the role due to his ‘method acting’ and his desire to have his character have a bit more grit and a little less vampire prince charming. His agents flew out and made sure the role wasn’t lost, and Robert was generally happy with the way Edward came across on screen during the first film.

I like the first one having been so wrought.’

We have to admit, the Twilight films are some of our guilty pleasure movies and we have to say that if these films are the ones that got Robert noticed and allowed him to take on films like Remember Me, Water for Elephants, and Cosmopolis – well – we’re even bigger fans of the franchise for it.
