‘COLONY’: Highlights of episode 3.02 ‘Puzzle Man’

The second episode of Colony season 3 brings the return of Eric Broussard along with several fascinating reveals.

‘Puzzle Man’ moves back and forth between Broussard and the Bowmans after Governor General Helena Goldwyn receives a jaw dropping revelation. Broussard starts out the episode as a loner and ends up both losing and gaining companions before the episode’s end. The Bowmans (and Uncle Alan!) are on the move throughout the latest installment of USA Network’s Colony.

Let’s look at the highlights from ‘Puzzle Man’.

Goodbye Factory

Governor General Helena Goldwyn is awakened in the middle of the night to learn that the Factory has been destroyed. Apparently, there is a war being waged in space and the hosts have enemies.

We find out that the Factory is where the defense grid was being built. If only the grid had been completed earlier, the attack may not have been successful. We learn that without a defense grid, Earth can be affected by the war in space.

News of the Factory’s demise is especially alarming to Helena because that is where her people in the Los Angeles Bloc were taken during the Rendition at the end of season 2. She sadly confirms that there are no survivors.

Helena quickly offers the assistance of her region for the rebuilding effort. They better do something fast because it sounds like this was just a preliminary attack.

Broussard is back

Fans were thrilled to see fan favorite Eric Broussard back on screen and to learn of his whereabouts.

Broussard seems to have avoided the Rendition effort. We have always known he is good at laying low. We find him camped out at the old Transitional Authority offices gathering paper shreds. He is putting the shreds back together to re-create documents outlining the plans of the Authority.

After a day of putting the pieces together, he eats some nasty looking canned food and checks in with a voice on the radio that goes by the name “Dispatch”. Dispatch is doing a roll call with several different regions.

It sounds like there is a group working together to help the surviving Colonists move undetected in and out of the blocs as needed. Dispatch and Broussard have a little flirtation going on after all the regions are accounted for. Is Eric Broussard connecting with someone?

Putting the pieces together

Then it is back to the paper shred puzzles. Of course, if you are trying to adhere hundreds and thousands of shreds together, you are going to need a lot of adhesive. Broussard makes a supply run in the Green Zone. There are still drones flying through the bloc, so he needs to remain in stealth mode at all times.

Hearts melt around the world when we see Broussard sitting at a child’s table gathering glue and tape to use for his intelligence project. Broussard hears a noise in the house and finds a little boy hiding underneath a table. The boy’s mother quickly enters the room ready to protect her son.

However, mom Claire and son Owen learn that Broussard is a good guy who can help them leave the bloc. They take him up on the offer and join him at the old Transitional Authority office. Broussard bonds with Owen giving him candy and enlisting his help with the “puzzles”.

Claire is grateful for Broussard’s help. He takes them to the tunnels where they will be smuggled out of the bloc. Broussard says goodbye at the hand-off location.

Plans fall through

Sometime later the mysterious Dispatch character arrives on scene to Broussard’s surprise. She shares that the safe house and smuggling effort was compromised. She explains that their whole relief team is gone. Tragically, it sounds like Claire and Owen never actually made it to safety.

Broussard and Dispatch update one another on the information they each have. Broussard shares that a bio-weapon is in the works now that the LA Bloc has been emptied. Dispatch is concerned that something similar may be happening in Seattle and they need to warn them.

Broussard says they still have work to be done. Dispatch agrees but says they need to move their effort. The two agree to accompany one another out of the bloc.

They come to the edge of the bloc with no one in sight. Broussard lights a flare and they continue onward.

Boxcar Bowmans

While Snyder and the two youngest Bowmans work on the “Uncle Alan” backstory, the rest of the Bowmans are headed to the meet with the Resistance member Bram contacted on the radio.

The contact is satisfied with the presentation of the gauntlet but not so happy about the unexpected number of people in the Bowmans’ group. She takes them to a railroad track and tells them to jump on the train that will be heading their way momentarily.

Talk about a leap of faith!

The whole crew climbs aboard the moving train and is met at their destination with another Resistance member named Vincent. He grills them a bit, especially about why Snyder, I mean, Uncle Alan, is with them. He seems to be satisfied with their story and takes them to a Resistance camp.

Vincent is surprised that he is not allowed to take the gauntlet directly to the person inside the cabin. He did say things were political there, so who knows?

Episode 2 of season 3 was chock-full of new information and game changers. I mean, no more Factory? That has been a staple of the first two seasons, a huge threat to the Colonists. Now it sounds like there is an even bigger threat with these new attackers.

Then again, it does beg the question of whether these new attackers could end up being allies to the Resistance. I am completely intrigued by all the new developments and characters so far in season 3.

I am reminded that Sarah Wayne Callies did say in our recent interview that much is revealed early in the season. We are beginning to see just how much!
