Today we celebrate International Women’s Day! What better way to honor this day than to look at A League of Their Own (1992) for this week’s Throwback Thursday. An uplifting story of a group of women in a man’s world of baseball directed by Penny Marshall.
The film centered around the story of two sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller(Lori Petty) who join the All-American Girls’ Professional Baseball League. While the story of the sisters and other characters are not based on real individuals, the story of the league is. It began in 1943 when most of America’s men were off fighting in World War II. The league lasted until 1954 and included over 600 women players.
The film starts out with agents scouting the country for top women athletes for their leagues. The sisters join teammates Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O’Donnell), Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh), and others to make up the Rockford Peaches. The women bond over training and society’s expectation of them.
Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), a former player, is brought on to manage their team despite his alcoholic tendencies. At first, he views this assignment as a waste of time because he doesn’t believe that women can play baseball to the same level as men. However, he soon realizes that the women have real talent and the games are just as exciting. There are some hilarious moments throughout this movie as well as some memorable quotes. The below clip is a fan favorite.
“Are you crying? There’s no crying in baseball!”
The women prove that they have just as many skills as their counterparts and they give spectators and the league owners a fantastic few seasons. They grow and learn from each other, and in the end, the remaining players reunite and reminisce about their times as ballplayers.
In 2016, cast members, Geena Davis, Patti Pelton, Freddie Simpson, Megan Cavanaugh, Anne Ramsay, and Tracy Reiner reunited for the second annual Bentonville Film Festival. It was a nostalgic reunion that gave us all the feels!
