‘DuckTales’ Un-Plucked – S2 Ep01: “The Most Dangerous Game… Night!”

After an absolutely awesome first season, Ducktales is finally back with new episodes. What new adventures will Season 2 bring? Will we see a clear difference between Season 1 and Season 2 storytelling? Let’s find out! So pull up your DVRs – or just click on the link below – and let’s get ready to take a Closer Look at the Season 2 premiere of Ducktales (2017), Episode 1: “The Most Dangerous Game… Night!”

Evolving Relationships & Purpose – Continuity & What Louie Contributes:

As I brought up a lot last season, unlike most children’s cartoons nowadays, Ducktales’s (2017) episodes actually has an order to them. Yes, you can watch most as standalone episodes, but when takes as a whole in order, there is a growth to the characters. This has thankfully continued in the transition from Season 1 to Season 2 as Team McDuck is a ‘well-oiled machine’ of adventures. The most notable of this is Dewey and Webby’s relationship as they now make the perfect pair in the field. This is no doubt a result of their adventures last season trying to discover clues about Della Duck. Sure they might not be able to win game night, but when danger strikes, these two have proven time and again last season that they have each other’s backs.

Though the best aspect of this being Season 2 of the series isn’t just how we see relationships continue to grow, but also how we see the characters themselves get fleshed out more. Season 1 took a lot of time to really show us how the 3 nephews were different: Huey is methodical, Dewey loves adventures and Louie lies and loves money. It’s clear how Huey and Dewey contribute on adventures – and if it wasn’t, the opening of this episode showed it – but we’ve rarely gotten a direct demonstration of what Louie contributes. We’ve seen his greed help ‘appraise’ things and him weasel his way out of tight spots, but the connection was never directly placed… until now! Louie sees all the angles and is able to look at things from a different perspective. This is why he’s crafty and good at lying, but is also what makes him excellent to have around during an adventure. This episode was largely about Louie not wanting to be a part of adventures because he felt his ultimate ‘purpose’ in each one was to ‘almost die’. Though now he knows that he can contribute to the team and adventures offer him just as much a test of skill as they do the others.

Things That “Quacked” Us Up – Easter Eggs, Quotes & More:

  • I love that the ‘pattern’ for dodging the arrow trap was actually the dance/ theme for the original Ducktales theme
  • If you thought the opening was just an Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark reference, you’re half right. You see, Indiana Jones was actually heavily inspired by the original Ducktales comic books. So Ducktales referencing the movie in such a direct manner is a VERY ‘come full circle’ moment.
  • I’m going to try applying the Woah!, Wait Wha? and AHHH to all adventure stories now.
  • You know what. Launchpad has crashed so many times, he MIGHT actually be immortal.
  • Scroogopoly… of course
  • Favorite Quotes:
    • “You know how competitive he gets when he’s trying to best an enemy. On Game Night, we are the enemies…”
    • “PARTNER UP EVERYONE!! If we lose, you’re out of the will…” / “I was in the will?” (Scrooge/ Donald)
    • “Oh…I sense that a Dark Magic is afoot in the uh… Etherial Plane. I must goooo.” / NO, you blasted phantasm. You will not leave me to deal with this!” / “Spooky things, farewell…” (Duckworth/ Beakley)
    • “OHHHH that’s why he picked Donald” / “You spend 30 years guessing what Donald is saying, you must get good at nonverbal communication.” (Dewey/ Webby)
