‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Originally had a Darker Ending

We thought that the ending of Avengers: Infinity War was gruesome. Heroes were killed, and half of life was wiped away, but that was nothing compared to what could have been. The ending could have been far worse, with Thanos walking through a river of blood at the ending of the acclaimed film.

The ending we saw had Josh Brolin’s Thanos finally acquiring all six infinity stones and eliminating half of the universe. The events that occurred were horrible, but most of the deaths were more sad than gruesome. The Marvel Studios blockbuster’s VFX team had envisioned the far worse ending with the river of blood, which was intended to show the victims who had died at his hand, as he encounters Gamora.

Slashfilm spoke to VFX supervisor, Dan DeLeeuw, at Digital Domain, where they first learned about the ending. “It got a bit dark, and the blood idea was scrapped.” Said Dan DeLeeuw.

Fans who wish to take a look at the dark ending can take a look at a prototype video on Digital Domain, at the 3:40 time stamp.

In the prototype, Digital Domain saw it fit to emphasize the power of the soul stone and what it could mean in the future. Lovers of the franchise will have to wait for Avengers 4 and see how Thanos’ trip into the Soul World will unfold. The good news is that the fallen heroes are not swimming in a river of their of blood due to the numerous theories arising about them just being trapped in the Soul Stone.

In recent films such as Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, there have been darker subplots which included abandoning children and even murder. Avengers: Infinity War, however, raised the bar when it came to dark MCU entries. The film was filled with terror: from its first death of Loki and Heimdall to a full fifty percent of life in the universe coming to an end. So, Thanos taking a stroll through a river of his victim’s blood would definitely have been traumatizing, and perhaps too far for the “dark” DC Universe to go.

Although it would have been bold, we were given the “what did it cost?” line while Thanos reunites with Gamora.

Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin. It was directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
