The following contains spoilers from season 9 of The Walking Dead. Only read on if you have watched episode 9.15 ‘The Calm Before’
AMC’s The Walking Dead is about to venture into uncharted territory for the series. After last week’s Game of Thrones “Red Wedding” style episode, we can officially say, “Winter is coming,” to The Walking Dead, and for the first time in 9 seasons, viewers will get to see what a snowstorm in the zombie apocalypse looks like.
It’s an interesting time to bring winter into the series, and AMC has just released a slew of photos from the season finale showing a snowy landscape. After the season 9 penultimate episode completely shook viewers to their core with 3 major deaths (and 10 deaths total), the winter wonderland images bring a certain softness to the brutal and dangerous apocalypse world.
In the last episode, Alpha and The Whisperers made it well known that they mean serious business. After Daryl, Michonne, Yumiko, and Carol have a dramatic and tense encounter with the group, they find an injured Siddiq and begin to head back to their community. It’s then that they find The Whisperers’ territorial border. It’s not until the group gets within feet of the border that they learn the true horror of what’s happened. These aren’t just any random walker heads sitting on top of the pikes. The group of them become distraught, and as they begin to break down into tears and complete grief, the camera pans to reveal The Whisperers’ victims; the three highwaymen, Frankie, Tammy Rose, Rodney, Addy, and most shockingly Enid, Tara, and Henry.
The scene is absolutely heartbreaking (and you can watch it, if you dare, HERE), and it’s a safe bet to assume our survivors are on a warpath of vengeance after seeing such a sight. Now, in addition to the regular dangers of the apocalyptic world, they have to navigate the weather elements for the first time too.
