Watch ’The Walking Dead’s Most Brutal and Shocking Scene from ‘The Calm Before’

When The Whisperers’ storyline was first introduced on AMC’s The Walking Dead, fans of the comics knew the horrors that were ahead. On Sunday night’s season 9 penultimate episode, a gruesome and shocking moment pulled directly from the comes came to life during the episode, and though there were a few significant differences, this particular scene will leave a lasting impact on The Walking Dead fandom for a long time to come. Of course, we’re talking about the infamous pikes and the brutal way in which The Whisperers leader Alpha (played by Samantha Morton) chose to mark her group’s territory.

After an intense encounter with The Whisperers, Daryl, Michonne, Yumiko, Carol, and Siddiq begin to head back to their communities. It’s then that they come across The Whisperers’ border. As they start to walk up a hill, they begin to see what look like tall-standing pikes. As the group begins to move closer, they can see what appear to be walker heads atop of the pikes.

It’s not until the group gets within feet of the border that they learn the true horror of what’s happened. These aren’t just any random walker heads sitting on top of the pikes. The group of them become distraught, and as they begin to break down into tears and complete grief, the camera pans to reveal The Whisperers’ victims; the three highwaymen, Frankie, Tammy Rose, Rodney, Addy, and most shockingly Enid, Tara, and Henry.

The scene is one of the most shocking moments so far this season, and perhaps on the series as a whole. With stand-out performances by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride reminiscent of their scene together back in season 2 when Carol’s daughter Sophie walks out of the barn, this episode packed an emotional punch. All we can say is that Alpha and The Whisperers have no idea what Carol is capable of on a regular day, but viewers know that after losing yet another child in this apocalypse, she’s sure to be on the warpath and out for vengeance now.

Next week is the season 9 finale, and winter is coming to the apocalypse. The Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights at 9 pm EST.
