‘The Mask’ Sequel In Development?

Is there a chance we are getting a true The Mask sequel? According to at least one report, Warner Brothers and New Line are in development for a return of the mischief masked man of trouble.

Earlier this year, the The Mask creator, Mike Richardson, indicated interest in a new reboot of the franchise which would have a female star instead of Jim Carrey. The original film was a success, making over $351 million at the box-office with a budget of $23 million. Therefore, there is plenty of reasons (money) to revisit the idea of a true sequel.

In 2005, Son of the Mask hit theaters, which starred Jamie Kennedy. However, the film as a flop with just a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 2.2/10 on IMDb. If a new film is going to be made, it will truly need Carrey to return as Stanley Ipkiss to draw moviegoers.

Carrey has been reluctant to do sequels to his earlier films and the sequel to Dumb and Dumber, Dumb and Dumber To, which came out in 2014, was not a critical success, however it did perform well with taking in $169 million at the box office.

The original Mask also starred Cameron Diaz and there is no report if she’d entertain returning to a sequel.

What are your thoughts, are you hoping to see a return of Jim Carrey to The Mask franchise? Let us know in the comments!
