‘Stranger Things’ fans Crash Minnesota Science Museum’s Website Buying Dustin’s Sweatshirt

How amped were you about the newest season of Netflix’s Stranger Things? Here at Fan Fest, the countdown for Season 2 began after we saw the very first episode of Season 1 – no joke!

Turns out, we aren’t the only ones who are die hard Stranger Things fans. Earlier this week, hundreds of Stranger Things fans headed to the website of the Science Museum of Minnesota to grab a piece of their own swag – the hoodie worn by Dustin in the second season of the Netflix show. The volume of fans that headed to the site was so large, that the server could not handle the demanding; causing it to crash.

A spokesperson for the museum confirmed to TheWrap that the website did crash “due to overwhelming volume when the Thunder Lizard hoodie that appeared on ‘Stranger Things’ went on sale yesterday.”

According to KARE11, a statement on the website read, “While we have an unlimited volume of apparel available online, due to high volume our online store has crashed. Please be patient as we do our best to bring it back online.”

The purple Brontosaurus sweatshirt made its appearance in the first episode of the second season.  It’s first appearance on the museums website on Monday, Nov. 7th at 8 a.m.

A release by the museum stated that the sweatshirt was fist made available in the Explore Store in the early 1980s, but after receiving numerous calls and emails, the museum made a decision to bring it back.

Although the website after 8 a.m., I.T was quick to get it back up and running by 11 a.m.

According to a museum’s spokesperson, the website sold $80,000 worth of Thunder Lizard merchandise in the first hour, with more than 12,500 hoodies, crewnecks and t-shirts having been sold online. Another shipment of hoodies will be made available Wednesday afternoon.

According to Newsweek, “Stranger Things” costume designer Kim Wilcox found the original vintage sweater online.

“I really loved the Brontosaurus for Dustin, so we bought the original,” she says. “Then we made our own purple hoodie with this great dinosaur art in Gaten’s size.”

The hoodie ranges from $15 to $30, size dependent, and all proceeds will advance the Science Museum’s mission.
