In season 2 of Stranger Things, there’s a new bad boy in the town of Hawkins, Indiana and his name is Billy Hargrove! We’re not talking about “Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) in season 1” kind of bad. Billy Hargrove takes things to a whole new level of bullying.
Hargrove is played by Australian actor Dacre Montgomery and, in a recent interview with GQ, he discusses how he went about auditioning for the role. Montgomery told GQ:
“I just kind of wanted to make a bit of a splash with the Duffers, because I assumed they would be getting so many tapes. I had the audition details for about a day, and I did the whole thing in the first day because I was so overwhelmingly excited about it.”
So, what exactly did Montgomery do in order to “make a splash” with the Duffer Brothers? Montgomery has graciously released his audition tape to the world and we are so thankful that he did! His splash-making four and a half minute audition video includes some seriously impressive role-playing/acting mixed in with some shirtless dancing to Dexys Midnight Runners and Duran Duran. This is just something that you have to see for yourself. Check out Montgomery’s audition video below:
Montgomery went on to further explain how he finally ended up snagging the role of the big, bad bully in season 2. He said:
“I got up, kinda went crazy, shaved all my hair off around my face except for my mustache, and then rang two friends who are still studying at the acting university that I went to here in Perth. I was like, ‘Can you help read for me behind the camera tonight?’ Then, during the day, I made everything else happen — the dancing and the rest, going out in the G-string and just playing around with it, and putting it together on iMovie and doing all that sort of stuff.”
Amidst the hilarious dancing, you can clearly see the pure and natural talent Montgomery possesses and why the Duffer Brothers chose him for this key role in season 2 of Stranger Things.
