Fans aren’t the only ones who feel the weight of everything that Infinity War brings.
So when Robert Downey Jr took the stage at the red carpet premiere, he really seemed to be reveling in everything the MCU has brought to his life. From the opportunities to the friends and the sense of self – he’s grateful to be part of something so wonderful.
Downey’s emotional speech really put into perspective what the role of Tony Stark has meant to him in his own life. It shaped who he is today.
‘I want to talk about the past, present, and future. The past for me was 30 years of dependency, depravity, and despair …. otherwise known as ‘An Actor Prepares!’’
Being a hero isn’t just about what our favorite heroes do in these films, it’s about the things they do when the cameras are off.
‘The present is this moment of glory for all of us. And the future…? That is always uncertain. But looking at these friends behind me,” he said, looking back at the faces of his fellow actors, “it seems like things might brighten up after all.’
He also gave a nod to the fact that women are necessary to making these movies because it’s so emotionally taxing. This came as he discussed the fact that Captain Marvel is happening soon. The first female-led MCU superhero film.
‘Now at least half a directing team is female. Making these movies is so taxing that it is clearly a woman’s job. It’s essentially gestation, but we don’t know how to do that.’
Amidst the laughter, he also touched on the MCU being right in front of the audience. In the actors and actresses that bring our favorite heroes to life. It’s their heart and dedication, talent and passion that has created something so lasting.
‘This is the MCU, right in front of you. It’s all about fighting for equality. The whole idea is to make space for others to succeed, and exceed our expectations.’
He added that the movies are metaphors into how the world could be if we can come together and make it so.
‘The movies are inviting us to surrender and love and be of service. They are metaphors for how our world should be — or could be, one day, if we fight for it.’
Here’s hoping we don’t have to say goodbye to Downey in the MCU any time soon. After that speech, we just want to keep Iron Man safe forever. Although, if his end is near, and he feels so privileged and at ease about it all – well, we couldn’t ask for anything more.
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.
