Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga Cast in ‘The Sopranos’ Prequel Film

Last week, HBO’s iconic and beloved crime drama The Sopranos celebrated its 20th anniversary alongside countless fans who honored the series and its legacy on social media. The amount of admiration that both Hollywood and audiences have for the series is unmatched and something that New Line Cinema is hoping to honor with their upcoming feature called The Many Saints of Newark, a Sopranos prequel set in the 1960s.

The Wizard of Lies’ Alessandro Nivola has already been cast to play Dickie Moltisanti, but according to Varietythe film just recently added The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal and Bates Motel’s Vera Farmiga to the cast. While the details surrounding their characters are being kept under wraps, fans should expect to see some familiar faces as a few characters from the original series are expected to be involved as well.

The Many Saints of Newark is “set in the era of the Newark riots in the 60s, when the African-Americans and the Italians of Newark are squaring off, and when among the gangsters of each group, it became especially lethal.” The film will be written by Sopranos creator David Chase and producer Lawrence Konner with the Emmy-award winning and Sopranos veteran Alan Taylor directing.

Starring Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco, and the late James Gandolfini, The Sopranos followed Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mob boss who seeks professional counseling after both the personal and professional issues in his home and business begin to affect his mental state. It ran from 1999-2007 on HBO and went on to win an astounding 21 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Jon Bernthal recently reprised his role as Shane Walsh for Andrew Lincoln’s final episode of The Walking Deadfor which he was a series regular during the first two seasons. He is currently starring on Netflix’s original series The Punisher and is set to appear in Snow Ponies alongside Evan Peters as well as Ford v. Ferrari, which follows the true story of the battle between Ford and Ferrari to win Le Mans in 1966.

Best known for her role as Norma Bates on Bates Motel, a role she brilliantly played for four years, Farmiga has recently appeared in The Conjuring 2, The Commuter and Amazon’s anthology series Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. She will soon be starring in the new Netflix miniseries Central Park Five as well.
