There are just some franchises that Hollywood has trouble saying goodbye to and Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne Universe is one of them. Fresh off the two hefty cancellations of Colony and Shooter, USA Network has ordered their Treadstone pilot to series, which is being dubbed as a Bourne spinoff following the fictional CIA black ops organization from the films.
According to Variety, Treadstone “centers on the fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy Jason Bourne. The covert program uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.”

Treadstone will be written and executive produced by Heroes helmer Tim Kring with Ramin Bahrani directing the pilot. It will be produced by Universal Cable Productions and Captivate Entertainment, which produced the feature films, will be sending Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner to executive produce on its behalf.
Adapted from Robert Ludlum’s novel series, The Bourne Universe has featured five feature-length films. The first three installments which included The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) starred Matt Damon as superspy Jason Bourne. The trilogy managed to gross an impressive $900 million at the global box office. In 2012 a fourth film in the franchise was released titled The Bourne Legacy. The film found Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner stepping into the lead role to play a new character named Aaron Cross, but in 2016 Damon reprised his role for the final installment Jason Bourne.
No casting announcements have been made yet but will be soon coming as Treadstone is set to begin production sometime in 2019.
What are your thoughts on a new installment in the Bourne universe? Are you excited to learn more about Treadstone?
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
