‘Han Solo’ Spin-Off Will Move Forward with Ron Howard at the Helm

Just days after the planned Han Solo spin-off will parted ways with its named directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Lucasfilm announced on Thursday that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard will be stepping in to take over.

Lucasfilm released a statement saying:

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

Howard has been responsible for an endless list of critically-acclaimed films including Apollo 13, The Da Vinci Code and A Beautiful Mind, just to name a few.  Howard actually won the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on A Beautiful Mind.  In addition, he has several connections to George Lucas and Lucasfilm.  Howard directed the 1988 classic film Willow and appeared in the 1973 film American Graffiti.

In addition to receiving accolades for directing, Howard is also no stranger to screen time as well.  He is perhaps best known for his roles on the iconic television series’ The Andy Griffith Show and, or course, Happy Days.

There is no doubt that Howard is a great choice to take over the Han Solo film.  In fact, this isn’t the first time that Howard has been asked to work on a Star Wars film.  In a 2015 podcast, Howard revealed that he had been approached by Lucas in the past and was asked to direct The Phantom Menace.  At the time, Howard passed on the opportunity stating that the thought of following up the original films was too daunting.

We can’t wait to see what he does with the Han Solo film!  What do you think about Ron Howard taking over as the director on the Han Solo spin-off film?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
