‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners Explain Why They are Taking Their Time with the Show’s Final Season

We’ve all heard the expression, “patience is a virtue,” but when it comes to waiting patiently for our favorite television series to return, it can be difficult to live up to that saying. Nobody knows this struggle better than Game of Thrones fans.

As the wait for the eighth and final season seems to be neverending, rest-assured the series showrunners aren’t just taking their time for dramatic effect. At Monday night’s Emmy Awards, showrunner David Benioff took a pause from the show’s impressive 9 wins to speak a bit about the upcoming season. Benioff addressed the one question that’s on everyone’s mind – what is taking so long?

Benioff explains that the series is going out with what sounds to be a massive spectacle of a season. In order to perfect all that they took on for the final season, they need as much time as they can get. He said:

I think when people see it, they’re going to understand why it took so long. The last season is far beyond what we’ve ever attempted before.”[/row]

Well, that certainly does sound promising! The final season of Game of Thrones is by far one of the most highly-anticipated television series events ever as fans wait to learn the epic conclusion of the battle for the Iron Throne.

In addition to the eighth and final season, HBO has announced that one of the potential Game of Thrones spinoff series received a pilot order from the network giving fans comfort that, though the original series might be coming to an end, there is still more story to be told once the final chapter of the HBO series airs. It was previously thought that the pilot for the Game of Thrones spinoff prequel series would begin filming this fall, however, Bloys confirmed it’s now expected to begin filming next year.

The final season of Game of Thrones will begin airing at some point in  2019.
