Favorite Female Characters on ‘Supernatural’

I love the men of Supernatural.  The main cast, the supporting cast, they have all made the show what it is over the years.  However, they have had some help along the way from the amazing women to grace the show as well.  The women of Supernatural do not get nearly enough credit where credit is due. Over the years, they have come to the aid and recuse of Dean and Sam as much as the Winchesters have aided others.  So its time the women of Supernatural finally receive the credit they deserve. A list of favorite female characters from the show. There are so many deserving characters. Only revisiting these female characters has been difficult.  However, these are some of the most powerful female characters on Supernatural to grace our screens over fourteen years.

Jody

Favorite Female Characters on 'Supernatural'
CW Network

There have been many close calls over the past couple of seasons with Jody.  I remember saying, “I hope they do not kill her off this episode.” I blame this on the pure fact that most of the women I have adored over the years have been killed off the show.  Jody is one of those strong female characters though that you look at and wish you could emulate. She contains this strength and courage locked inside of oneself but somehow seems out of reach. Jody does not let the fear she feels deter her from doing the right thing.  She encourages others to tap into their potential even after the sorrow she has had to endure.  In many ways, Jody is one of the most inspirational characters on the show, which makes her easy to admire.

Charlie

Favorite Female Characters on 'Supernatural'
CW Network

From the moment Charlie appeared on Supernatural, fans immediately wanted more from her.  Charlie is the one character we could all connect with on another level. Charlie was the nerd to the core.  She was the character who had no problem displaying a Funko Pop figure on her desk. She made her desktop background on her computer an image from one of her favorite television shows.  A friend of mine still wants a spin-off series of her adventures in Oz somehow. I cannot fathom how no one thinks this is a brilliant idea! “Pac-Man Fever” is the moment I was able to truly connect with Charlie.  Watching her deal with finally letting go of her mother wrecked me. Yet I still appreciate the show for tackling the issue all the same.  This moment made me love Charlie even more than before sealing her fate as one of my favorite female characters.

Rowena

supernatural favorite female characters
CW Network

Thank goodness for protection spells.  When I thought Rowena was killed off the show, I immediately wanted them to fix their mistake.  They had this all wrong. Rowena has teetered on the line of good and bad alongside her son Crowley many times.  However, she too has come through for the Winchesters just as much as her son.  She also takes the time to look after herself though as well as the ones she loves. Although she will never admit such to anyone, Rowena has one of the biggest hearts on the show. Once devoted to merely taking care of herself, she goes out of her to help those around her.  She represents the perfect example of self care and compassion.  Who thought such would happen when she was introduced?

Donna

Favorite Female Characters on 'Supernatural'
CW Network

I continue to appreciate the fact that Donna is always herself.  She made me realize my cream filled powdered doughnuts are okay to consume on occasion.  The fact she continued to eat, and share, her doughnuts with Dean proved her individuality in strides.  From that very moment, I immediately thought to myself, “Please don’t kill her!” Thankfully, Donna continues to come back on occasions to help our boys.  I am still upset that the spin-off series featuring her and Jody did not come into fruition.  There are a lot of important moments that the two of them could offer the Supernatural universe. While Donna never wanted to accept that all the supernatural lore was real, she has truly come into her own. She is an excellent ally for the Winchesters  making her land on my list of favorite female characters.

Ruby

female character
CW Network

I love both versions of Ruby.  She was by far one of my favorite demons.  The relationship which developed between her and Sam is one of the most interesting relationships of the entire series.  A relationship that should not have happened.  Yet a relationship born out of blood lust to cause the beginning of the apocalypse! Whether portrayed by Katie Cassidy or Genevieve Cortese, Ruby was a character that managed to get under our skin.  She was also a character we wanted to believe had changed for Sam. The reveal she had not changed came as a surprise after viewing her through Sam’s eyes the entire season.  My favorite appearance of Ruby was in “The French Mistake“.  The alternate reality where Sam married Genevieve will remain forever classic!

Meg

Favorite Female Characters on 'Supernatural'
CW Network

Cas is her unicorn.  He showed her some of what he learned from the pizza guy.  I want to continue shipping them and pretend they are canon somehow. This is like the storyline within my guilty pleasure Little Nicky. The difference the Supernatural made it more enjoyable somehow.  For me, it’s hard to see anyone else in this role other than Rachel Miner despite her not originating the role.  That is why while watching older episodes always makes me tilt my head. Seeing someone else in the role of one our favorite female demons is always strange. Knowing the copious amounts of torture that Meg endured to help protect the world makes her one of my favorite female characters.  Plus she had sarcasm that matched Dean’s and that is not easy to come by in this series.

Jo Harvelle

female character
CW Network

There was one other female character that gave Dean a true run for his money though.  Jo Harvelle is the female Dean Winchester.  Rooting for Jo and Dean to become a couple was easy. Knowing the show did not adopt a no girl’s allowed club finally made adoring her even easier.  Unfortunately, at the end of season five, we had to watch Jo die while next to her mother Ellen.  Normally when shocked by a show I do not become very emotional. Jo’s death is one of the few instances in the show that made me cry though. Her death made her appearance in “Defending Your Life” much harder to swallow.  When her hand brushes against Dean’s cheek ever so gently, I lose it every time.  Despite the sorrowful moment, the moment cemented her as one of my favorite female characters.

Bella Talbot

Favorite Female Characters on 'Supernatural'
CW Network

Bella is one of the most underrated female characters within Supernatural. With a rich backstory, we learned why Bela made a deal with a crossroads demon. We understood during the reveal many people would have done the same. This does not make it easier to accept when the hell hound finally comes for her. In fact, viewing this scene and knowing that is what awaits Dean later that very season makes it worse. Bella did the impossible though.  She tricked the Winchesters.  That is no easy task. Despite selling the supernatural artifacts she became determined to change the path she was on.  Though she did not have much success keeping her soul, she still deserves more credit than she often times receives.

Ellen Harvelle

female character
CW Network

When one gets into the world of hunting they typically know what is in store. They accept that most hunters make it out only by death and choose to protect the world anyway. Despite not wanting her daughter Jo involved it was only a matter of time she follows in her father’s footsteps. Footsteps that mirrored one another in the end but could not have made Ellen prouder. In many ways, audiences lose the mother of the show all over again. Ellen’s choice to die with her daughter in the apocalypse makes sense though. After all, she had to watch her daughter pass away moments before. This did not make losing a member of the Supernatural family an easier. She was a true protector and a fierce hunter.  Her time on the show proved that female hunters are as amazing as their male counterparts. Thankfully though in an amazing alternate timeline she found love with Bobby.  If only that timeline were real and we still had them both.

Abaddon

Favorite Female Characters on 'Supernatural'

Some might say that Abaddon is the baddest of them all.  After all, she took out the Men of Letters and was one of the Knights of Hell.  She even briefly became the Queen of Hell and came back to life despite her decapitation via Dean! Granted, most of the characters on the show have died and come back. Abaddon manages to take it to a whole other level. She made sure to make the most of her second chance.  Abaddon easily became one of my favorite villains the Winchesters have had to deal with in the entire series.  She is the character we all loved to hate, which is a rarity in villains these days.  Though I do not expect another appearance by her in the final season, she remains of my favorite female characters all the same.

Although plenty of other females who could have made the list, these are my all time favorite female characters of Supernatural. My honorable mentions start with Mary Winchester.  My remaining honorable mentions belong to Lilith, Anna Milton, Becky Rosen, and Missouri Moseley. Who was your favorite female character on Supernatural over the years?  Do you hope to see some of these characters make a comeback somehow in the final season?  Make sure to let us know in the comments below.

And don’t forget to tune into the final season of Supernatural this Fall on the CW.
