Did You Catch this ‘Breaking Bad’ Easter Egg on ‘Fear the Walking Dead’?
It’s been a long-time fan theory that two of AMC’s most popular shows, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, are somehow connected. Many fans believe that these series take place within the same universe or that, perhaps, Breaking Bad is even the prequel to the zombie apocalypse which is the forefront of The Walking Dead.
The verdict is still out on whether or not the two shows actually exist within the same universe but, one thing’s for sure, the folks from The Walking Dead universe certainly have placed some deliberate nods to Breaking Bad within the episodes. For example, during season two, we see a bag of what appears to be blue meth amidst Merle Dixon’s drug stash. Is that Walter White’s blue sky creation? There are a handful of other references from both series but, let’s throw a third series into the mix, just to make things even more interesting.
On Sunday night’s mid-season premiere of Fear the Walking Dead, there was a clear reference to Breaking Bad for those who were listening very closely. If you listen closely during the scene where Madison (played by Kim Dickens) is walking into the Bazar market in Mexico, a familiar song can be heard playing through the streets. That song is Negro y Azul: The Ballad of Heisenberg. The song first appeared in the Breaking Bad universe during the opening of the seventh episode of the second season. While the song playing on Fear the Walking Dead still isn’t confirmation that the worlds are connected, it is confirmed that this was a nod of admiration to Breaking Bad. Entertainment Weekly spoke with Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erickson about the mini-crossover moment. Erickson said:
“I tried to be subtle with it. That was probably the moment when I fell the most deeply in love with Breaking Bad, when they did that cold open music video. As we were looking for pieces to incorporate into this world, it had the right vibe to it. It’s a gentle nod of admiration and adoration to Vince Gilligan.”
We appreciate Erickson’s appreciation for one of the greatest shows ever, Breaking Bad.
