‘Deep Blue Sea 2’ is Officially Happening!

It has been close to 20 years since we saw the shark frenzy thriller, Deep Blue Sea. The film’s plot focused on a group of scientist searching for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease, doing their testing on a trio of three Mako Sharks. Unfortunately, the project goes awry and the scientists find themselves fighting against the sharks – who are now genetically bigger, smarter, and a whole lot faster. When the movie was first released, it’s by far the second-best shark movie created, right behind the original thriller,  Jaws.

SyFy has just announced that they have plans to release a sequel in 2018 – Deep Blue Sea 2 in 2018. Filming began over the summer in Cape Town, South Africa (which is actually one of the shark capitols of the world!) and has since completing filming. While we don’t have an official release date just yet, SyFy has announced that the sequel will be given a R-rating for creature violence, gore and language.

The plot for Deep Blue Sea 2, kicks off with shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun invited to consult on a top-secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). Calhoun is shocked to learn that the company is using the unpredictable and highly aggressive bull sharks as its test subjects.

Matt Bierman, creative executive for Warner Bros, recently had this to say about the upcoming sequel.

“We are a true sequel. We wanted to keep to the spirit of Deep Blue Sea and why people love it. The research that was used on the sharks in Deep Blue Sea 2 comes from the mythology and story line of the first movie. We have given the lead shark a personality and hope the fans will embrace that as it really helps the storytelling and the narrative in a way that first one didn’t. Deep Blue Sea 2 has a slightly slower build but once the rubber band snaps things go boom really quickly!”

We will keep you posted on all the official updates as they come! We sure cannot wait to check this one out!
