The very first shark movie that I ever saw, like 90% of the human population was the classic Jaws. As a matter of fact, my dad made my brother and I watch it at our hotel in Wildwood, New Jersey so that when we went to the beach later on that day we would not go too far out in the water.
After viewing that movie, I didn’t even try putting a toe in the ocean until three years later. I mean, I was six when I saw that movie!
I was recently discussing the subject matter of large animal destruction movies with my fellow writer, Denise Caputo and we talked about how (for some reason) we found ourselves loving them.
Now, come August of next year we will be getting another one… in the form of a shark! However, this is not the tale of a Classic Great White. This is that of the Megalodon, a gigantic species of shark that has been said to be extinct for years. (So they SAY… but we also only know about 20% of what is actually in the ocean).
Today, Warner Bros. released a production still from their upcoming summer thriller flick The Meg.
The film, is about a deep-sea submersible is attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer to save the crew from this prehistoric threat.
In a recent interview with Empire, Jason Statham opened up about his role in the film:
“I play a former navy captain and diver and I get hired to rescue a team of scientists who are trapped at the bottom of the sea in their research station by a giant shark. Then all hell breaks loose…Who doesn’t want to watch a film about the biggest shark that’s ever existed?”
John Turteltaub (National Treasure) will be directing the film from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber – which is based on the New York Times best-selling book by Steve Alten.
The Meg will debut in theaters on August 10, 2018.
