Zendaya’s High School Drama ‘Euphoria’ Ordered to Series at HBO
Back in March, HBO ordered a pilot for a series titled Euphoria starring Zendaya and it looks like they enjoyed what they got because the premium cable network has just ordered it to series with Hip-hop star Drake joining as an executive producer.
Euphoria is based on a 2012 Israeli series of the same name and follows “a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love, and friendship.” The Greatest Showman’s Zendaya will topline the series as Rue, a lying, drug-addicted 17-year-old girl. She will lead a cast that also includes Girls’ Maude Apatow, Red Band Society’s Brian “Astro” Bradley, Grey’s Anatomy’s Eric Dane, and The Handmaid’s Tale Sydney Sweeney. In addition, Angus McLoud, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Storm Reid and Hunter Schafer will also star.
Joining Drake on the creative team will be HBO alum Sam Levinson (Wizard of Lies) who will write the entire ten-episode first season as well as the original creators of the 2012 series Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin. The pilot episode was directed by Augustine Frizzell.
HBO is fresh off a panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour where they made some pretty exciting announcements including a Deadwood movie as well as when fans can expect the final season of Game of Thrones to premiere. In addition, they gave fans a little bit of a taste of the Game of Thrones prequel series and earlier this month they ordered a sci-fi show from Joss Whedon to series.
Zendaya recently appeared in Hugh Jackman’s PT Barnum musical The Greatest Showman and became a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she starred in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming alongisde Tom Holland. She will be reprising her role as Michelle for the 2019 sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home. She also wrapped up her starring role earlier this year as K.C. Cooper on Disney Channel’s K.C. Undercover, which ran for three seasons.
