HBO’s Casey Bloys Reveals New Details About the ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Series

There’s a lot more Game of Thrones goodness in the works for fans of the HBO megahit series, and finally, we have some new details regarding the upcoming prequel series.

HBO president Casey Bloys recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly where he explained a little bit about the upcoming new series. Of course, any major details are still being kept under wraps, but Bloys did disclose that the new series will be set way, WAY in the past. We’re talking 8000 years in the past! Bloys said:

[row]“The story’s time period, another 8,000 years before [the events in Game of Thrones]. It’s far enough away so it feels like a different story, a different world because it is. The Kingdoms do not exist at this point. We’re not trying to do Game of Thrones Part II.”[/row]

Choosing such a far-off time period for the prequel will allow the series to stand on its own while also tying into familiar events from the Game of Thrones world such as the construction of the Northern Wall, for example. Bloys continues saying:

[row]“By setting it when we did, there’s a lot going on, a lot of dynamics that are related to Game of Thrones, but it’s different enough with its time period and characters” that fans won’t get burned out.”[/row]

We love everything we are hearing so far and we are totally intrigued! The prequel pilot will be written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) along with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. Goldman will also serve as showrunner as well as executive producer along with Martin.

Goldman’s prequel is one of five potential spinoff series (or, as Martin calls them “successor series”) which were in development. Though the story told by the prequel series will exist in the same universe as Game of Thrones, Martin has recently revealed via his blog that none of the Thrones characters (or actors) will appear in the new show. According to Deadline, the prequel series is described as chronicling, “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

In addition to the prequel series, the final season of Game of Thrones is also on deck for HBO. The eighth and final season will be the epic conclusion of the battle for the Irone Throne. Bloys also confirmed that the final season of Game of Thrones will premiere sometime in the first half 2019 though no formal premiere date has yet been announced.
