‘Westworld’ Launches a “Choose Your Own Adventure” Type Game via Amazon Alexa

Welcome to Westworld! No, seriously. Now, you can experience and interact with a Westworld right from the comforts of your own home. What could possibly go wrong, right?

For those unfamiliar with the HBO’s hit series, Westworld provides both the characters on the show, as well as its viewers, an escape from reality through artificial intelligence. In the series, those who choose to visit the Westworld theme park can interact with robotic (though incredibly lifelike) hosts in order to play out different narratives and experiences. When the hosts begin glitching causing them to go off-script and wreak havoc, no one, including the park’s developers and creators, is safe.

The series stars an all-star cast including Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores Abernathy), Thandie Newton (Maeve Millay), Jeffrey Wright (Bernard Lowe), James Marsden (Teddy Flood), Ed Harris (the Man in Black), Anthony Hopkins (Dr. Robert Ford), Jimmi Simpson (William), Luke Hemsworth (Ashley Stubbs) and many others.

Now, HBO and Amazon have launched Westworld: The Maze a “choose your own adventure” type game which you play using your Amazon Echo or other Alexa enabled devices. To enter the world and attempt to solve the maze, all you need to do is say three magic words, “Alexa. Open Westworld.”

Once play begins, there are three different levels to play from with over 60 storylines and 400 possible choices to chose from all relating back to the Westworld universe. You enter the game as a host, like from the television series, however, if you make the wrong choices throughout your playing, you can “die,” so be sure to choose wisely.

According to Entertainment Weekly and a press release from HBO, “the game takes about 20 minutes to complete for those cunning enough to stay alive that long. Each moment of the game was designed with a purpose, much like the show itself. Within the game’s detailed sound design and scripted interactions, anything could be a clue. It will take a true superfan to find the center of The Maze.”

Senior vice president, HBO digital and social marketing Sabrina Calouri said, “Voice is the next frontier of interactive storytelling, with a powerful ability as a marketing tool to deepen engagement with our fanbases. We’re excited to launch our first Voice initiative as a Westworld story extension that we hope will surprise and delight our viewers.”

HBO released the below trailer to introduce the game, but “it doesn’t look like anything to me.”
