A truly fun experience!

‘The Walking Dead’ Cast and Crew Pay Tribute to Scott Wilson

The Walking Dead has always been a family. Whether it’s the cast and crew’s close relationship with each other, their relationships with the fans, or the camaraderie among the fandom itself, there is a special bond between everyone this show has impacted. That’s why the loss of Scott Wilson, who played Hershel Greene on the series, completely shattered everyone’s hearts. He was a kind, gentle, humble and incredible man to everyone he encountered and a bright light in such a dark series. While his death is absolutely devastating to his fans, the cast and crew of The Walking Dead are grieving the loss of a colleague and dear friend. Many of them have taken to social media to remember the amazing human being that Wilson was and as heartbreaking as a lot of them are, the tributes are beautiful, truly touching and prove just how special the bond of The Walking Dead is.

I am utterly broken hearted to hear about the passing of Scott Wilson this evening. We had just completed the NYCC Walking Dead panel on which the crowd erupted in cheers when Angela Kang announced that he’d be appearing on season 9 at some point. A little less than an hour later I got the terrible news. All of the best parts of Hershel Greene came from Scott—he was so incredibly sweet, warm, and wise. When we lost Hershel on the show it was a week after my own father passed away and when Scott came on Talking Dead he said so many kind and wonderful things to me afterwards that brought me great comfort. I really will miss him and the gentle, compassionate eyes that gave Hershel so much soul. I am so sad to know that the world is without him tonight. It’s important to me to let you know that we pretaped the first episode of Talking Dead last week when the cast members were in LA for the WD premiere screening so please know that is the only reason why we don’t pay our respects to him in our show tomorrow. #RIPScottWilson

A truly great man with a huge heart has left us. I can see him smiling that magic smile of his. Deep love and peace to his other friends and to his family, especially dear Heavenly who was everything to him. This is the only picture I have of Scott and me but it was a special moment, as they always were with this honest, funny, tender, warm, kind and young at heart artist with integrity coming off him in waves. Scott and I hadn’t seen each other in about 12 years, back when he was friends with my ex husband, coming round to visit us for long conversations into the night. I always admired him, his talent and his spirit, his great stories, wry sense of humor, his love of acting, of actors and of the crazy business of telling stories. Scott was a special person. He showed deep intelligence, curiosity and generosity, never afraid to calmly point out where you might be missing the good stuff or what was bullshit either. It was also remarkable the way he looked at and talked about his glowing wife Heavenly with such love and respect. There was the sense of two people who had fought and won together. All these years later we found ourselves part of the same Walking Dead family, meeting on the convention circuit. He came to my table to find me and after a warm hug, the first thing he wanted to know, focusing those amazing eyes of his right into my no-bullshit zone was how I was doing on the show, was how I was, truly. Scott was like that: a shining reminder of the benefits of caring deeply about and celebrating what was good in life. I’m so grateful for all the reunions that followed and for his effect on everyone who met him or saw his work. Today, with a heavy heart, I will none the less carry on celebrating him and everything he stood for. Thank you Scott. You left us with a hell of a lot.

He was one of the first friends I made on the show. We ended every conversation with “I love you” and then we talked some more (a lot more, always) and said “I love you” again, usually a few more times. He’s been in my profile photo for years because social media sucks sometimes but it made me happy every time I saw his face. He was a tremendous actor, but offscreen, he was also gentle and kind and fucking hilarious and a devoted husband and wonderful friend and real-life badass on the sly. Like his character Hershel, he was like a surrogate father and grandfather to so many in the TWD family. RIP Scott Wilson. I love you. I’m clumsily trying to put into words what it was like to know you but words are simply not enough. And these pictures are blurry but I will always remember you like this, as family, full of warmth, with a hug like no other. I’m so grateful to have known you. My heart is with your wife, and everyone else that was part of the chosen family the two of you created, and the many fans whose lives you touched with your work. I love you. I love you. I love you. ❤️
