‘The Munsters’ Reboot in Works at NBC from Jill Kargman and Seth Meyers
The Munsters are coming back to television! NBC has announced that a new series inspired by the original 1960s classic is in the works for the network.
In the new version of The Munsters, instead of living at the iconic 1313 Mockingbird Lane, the family will be living in a hipster neighborhood in Brooklyn. The series will follow their hilarious struggles as they try to stay true to themselves while fitting in with the “normal” crowd.
Jill Kargman (Odd Mom Out) and Seth Meyers (SNL, Late Night with Seth Meyers) are teaming up for the project with Kargman writing the script and Meyers producing.
This isn’t the first time the classic television series is being rebooted. Back in 2012, NBC and Universal put together a reboot starring Jerry O’Connell Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as his wife Lily, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa and Charity Wakefield as cousin Marilyn. The reboot was written by Bryan Fuller and aired as an hour-long Halloween special but, was not picked up to move forward as a series.
Even though the network originally passed on the project back then, there was still a glimmer of hope that The Munsters would, one day, return to the small screen. Back in 2013, NBC chief Bob Greenblatt had told Deadline: “I won’t say we won’t do another version of The Munsters again. We tried to make it an hour, which ultimately has more dramatic weight than a half-hour.”
The original series aired on CBS from 1964-1966 and starred Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster, Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster, Al Lewis as Grandpa, Beverly Owen (and later Pat Priest) as their teenage niece Marilyn, and Butch Patrick as Eddie Munster.
