The hit Freeform drama The Fosters will be ending after a five-season run.
Fortunately, this isn’t goodbye for two of our favorites: Mariana and Callie.
Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell will star in a spinoff series that will focus on their characters as they enter adulthood. The girls move to Los Angeles to pursue their different paths: Mariana will dive into the world of tech while Callie continues with her social work.
Karey Burke, Freeform’s EVP programming and development says that “both of them will be faced with the challenges of working in a cultural divide all the while pursuing their dreams that have been laid into those characters throughout The Fosters…It’s really about expanding the universe and continuing the legacy of The Fosters but in a different venue.”
The creators and producers, Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg, as well as Joanna Johnson, felt the next step was to focus on the younger characters and watch them grow.
There will be a time jump, but the spinoff will keep ties to the original series, meaning that favorite characters will make guest appearances. The spinoff also promises to keep the authenticity and relevance of the original series.
“The show has never strayed from controversy, it’s never strayed from important social topics. It helped first ABC Family and now Freeform not just be a part of this national conversation but lead it. It’s really been an important bedrock for this channel, and the future path that we’re taking on today with shows like The Bold Type and Grown-ish, which premieres tonight. We’re extremely proud of it and hope to continue its relevance with the new series,” Burke says of the original series.
The series will end with a three-part finale this summer. The finale will set the scene for the yet unnamed spinoff.
The Fosters returns with season 5B on January 9th, 2018.
