Teaser and Title for ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ are Here!

Star Wars Celebration is happening right now in Chicago, and as anticipated by fans, the panel for Episode IX was streamed live yesterday on the Star Wars YouTube channel. During the panel, audience members both at the convention and watching at home were treated to both a title, and the very first teaser for the Star Wars movie as well!

The teaser begins with the sound of Rey breathing, before she is seen on a sand planet, presumably Jakku, being chased by a First Order vehicle as she ignites her lightsaber and attempts to jump above the pursuing vehicle. Furthermore, after seeing Kylo Ren fighting alongside stormtroopers in a battle and Finn with Poe in a setting that also looks like Jakku, the teaser shows the Millenium Falcon being flown by none other than Lando Calrissian! Lando, played by his original actor, Billy Dee Williams, who is seen wearing the same outfit that Donald Glover wore as Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Toward the end of the teaser Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, shares a hug with Rey as Luke’s voice is heard.

After that, there’s an “evil laugh,” which was followed by the title of the movie: The Rise of Skywalker. Mark Hammil was confirmed a while back to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker, who fans have speculated will be a force ghost in The Rise of Skywalker. Personally, I think the title is referring to Luke; despite having died in The Last Jedi, he could be more than just force ghost. During the Episode IX panel at Star Wars Celebration, Ian McDiarmid appeared onstage shortly after the teaser was shown, thereby confirming that his character, Palpatine, was the source of laughter at the end of the trailer!

Prior to the release of the teaser, Lucasfilm had also announced that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled to release on December 20, 2019.
