‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Sonequa Martin-Green’s Character Name Revealed

The new CBS All-Access series Star Trek: Discovery has officially released the character name and rank of it’s lead role. Are you ready? It’s not what you would expect.  Sonequa Martin-Green will be playing the role of First Officer Michael Burnham. Star Trek: Discovery revealed the news via Twitter.

If you are new to the fandom and are unfamiliar with the franchise, First Officer is second in command, just below the captain of the starship. First Officer can also be referred to as Lieutenant Commander,  Executive Officer, XO, or Number One. The most notable First Officers have been Spock (USS Enterprise), Lieutenant Commander William T. Riker (USS Enterprise-D), Major Kira Nerys (Deep Space 9), Lieutenant Commander Worf (USS Defiant) and Commander Chakotay (USS Voyager).

The show will be the first in the franchise to have a lead character be someone other than the captain. This will allow it the opportunity to tell a completely different story. Other cast announcements that have been made are Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) as Discovery Captain Lorca and Rainn Wilson (The Office) as Harry Mudd. Wilson’s character is a con-artist that was originally in introduced in the 1960’s series.

Sonequa also played Sasha Williams on AMC’s The Walking Dead from Seasons 3-7. Sasha was killed-off on Sunday night’s Season 7 finale in an EPIC way. She “walker-fied” herself in hopes of killing Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan,  and saving her friends and family.  For a recap of The Walking Dead season finale click here.

Last year, it was announced that she was cast to star in Star Trek: Discovery even though she was still actively apart of The Walking Dead. This left many to speculate the fate of Sasha on the show. Was she going to die? Was she going to disappear like Heath? Well, after Sunday’s episode, we can all put the speculation, sadly, to rest.

But even though we will all miss our beloved Sasha, who was one badass sniper, Sonequa isn’t going to be that far away. Star Trek: Discovery is currently in production and is expected to premiere sometime late-summer or early-fall on CBS’ All-Access.
