Oscars 2019: ‘Black Panther’ Receives Historic Best Picture Nomination

Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther continues to defy the odds and trailblaze superhero movies into a new realm in Hollywood. The film, which was the highest-grossing movie of 2018, earned an astounding seven Academy Award nominations at this morning’s announcement ceremony including a spot in the coveted Best Picture category. The recognition in the top category marks the first time that a superhero or comic book-inspired film has ever been nominated.

In addition to Best Picture, Black Panther also received nominations in costume design, production design, sound editing, and sound mixing, as well as best original score (Ludwig Göransson) and original song. (“All the Stars”). While the film had been heavily campaigning, the nominations are still a welcomed surprise seeing as last year, it felt as though the Oscars had created their short-lived category of Best Popular Film in order to avoid nominating it for Best Picture in the first place. Another way that Black Panther is standing out amongst the nominees is that it was released way back in February of 2018, breaking a long-standing Oscar tradition of having a majority of the nominees being films released in the last quarter of the year.

Black Panther marks the first time that a superhero film found its way into one of the major categories since Heath Ledger’s nomination and win for The Dark Knight in 2008. Despite not being nominated for Best Picture, the Christopher Nolan film certainly paved the way. In addition, James Mangold’s Logan recieved writing nominations at last year’s ceremony.

In December of last year, Black Panther was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture- Drama. It was the first Marvel Studios movie and first superhero movie to earn a Golden Globe nomination in that category. At the Oscars, Black Panther is up against BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody. The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, and Vice in the Best Picture category.

The 91st Academy Awards will air on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8/7c on ABC.
