NBCUniversal Executive Confirms ‘Downton Abbey’ Movie is Officially in the Works

Hey Downton Abbey fans!  Are you still mourning the end of the popular British drama series?  Well, here’s some great news for you!  There is a Downton Abbey film in the works!

President of NBCUniversal International Studios, Michael Edelstein, confirmed to the Associated Press last week that a film version of the beloved series has been in the works for a fairly long time.  Production on the film is expected to begin sometime in 2018.

At the opening of Downton Abbey: The Exhibition in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, Edelstein told the AP:

We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the [cast] together because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

There are high hopes that the full cast from the series will be returning for the film though there aren’t reports yet as to any actors being officially signed on for the production.  In fact, some cast members are only just now finding out that the production is officially a go.

Sophie McShera, who played Daisy on the series, for example, told the Associate Press:

“Oh, well, you’ve got confirmation before us. We have no idea if that’s happening, but we would all love to be part of the film if it was to happen, for sure.”

Laura Carmichael, who played Lady Edith on the series added:

“Well, tell my agent, because we’re still wanting to know.  We’re hoping that will happen soon.”

The Downton Abbey series aired from 2010 to 2015 and followed the Crawley family and their servants and house workers.  The Crawley family is an elite and aristocratic bunch living in England where the series takes place.  The series followed the lives of the characters amidst the backdrop of several historical events including the sinking of the Titanic and World War I.  The series became extremely popular, not just in the UK and in America but in at least 150 countries worldwide.

In addition to Carmichael and McShera, the series also starred Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, and Maggie Smith, just to name a few.
