This might be the droid you are looking for if you’re looking for the brand new Star Wars droid that rolls on the dark side!
On Thursday, Disney and robotics company Sphero released a first look at the new little guy who looks like the exact polar opposite of BB8. The new droid is named BB-9E and he is described by the companies as a “rolling menace.” According to Variety, BB-9E is part of the Astromech unit of the First Order.
Just like its counterpart, BB-9E has a rolling ball-like body however, there are some striking differences between the two droids. For starters, BB-9E is black and gray in color, further promoting his darker side association. Additionally, the head of the droid is differently shaped and has what appears to be a red laser eye.
The new little guy can be yours to own as Sphero has released a brand new toy featuring the character as part of the global Force Friday II celebration kick-off. It features 40 sounds and comes with a companion app that allows the droid to understand nine different commands, such as “patrol,” “run away,” or “look around.” BB-9E can also follow the path of just about any course you can create via the app. Such a smart little guy! BB-9E costs $149.99.
In addition to the new BB-9E, a brand new toy based on everyone’s favorite droid R2-D2 was also unveiled today. You can own the new R2-D2 toy for $179.99.
Disney executive Jimmy Pitaro commented release of the two new toys:
“Since Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon 40 years ago, consumer products have been a critical part of the fan experience, helping to introduce new audiences to the franchise’s rich stories and characters. Technology-powered storytelling is at the core of the ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ product line, and will immerse fans in the Star Wars universe like never before.”
Star Wars fans are definitely going to want to get their hands on the new BB-9E and also, be on the look out for more awesome new releases coming from the franchise on Force Friday II!
