Fans of Law & Order are in for a treat as the series takes a new direction with a spinoff coming this fall. This series will focus on ‘true crime’ stories and it’s kicking off with the disturbing story of the murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez. Their sons, Erik and Lyle, were responsible for the murders but the story doesn’t stop, or begin, there.
After two deadlocked juries and a mistrial, the brothers were convicted of the murder but their defense attorney, Leslie Abramson, told stories of abuse and assault at the hands of Jose and Kitty. So much so that Erik and Lyle are seen in the eyes of many as the real victims.
If you’re not familiar with the crimes, the story is pretty gruesome.
The brothers shot their parents Kitty and Jose. Jose first, point-blank in the back of the head with a 12-guage shotgun. The noise woke Kitty up and she ran for the hallway but was shot in the leg. This caused her to slip in her own blood and she was shot several more times. The wounds in her arm, chest, and face left her unrecognizable.
The murder was planned, so much so that they actually bought tickets to a film they didn’t see, dumped their guns off of Mulholland Drive, and went to find a friend to serve as an alibi but were unable do so. Then, they went home and at 11:47 p.m. they made the call to 911 where Lyle cried ‘Somebody killed my parents!’
The police did consider the brothers suspects but didn’t have evidence and they also didn’t ask the brothers to undergo shotgun residue tests.
While the murder will undeniably be focused upon, after watching the trailer, it seems that the story that True Crime will really tell is the one where the brothers claimed to be sexually, physically, and emotionally abused by their parents for years – causing them to commit the murders.
‘When you terrorize people, they react, precisely as you would expect them to’
The Menendez Brothers are also the center of an upcoming Lifetime Movie and an ABC and HLN special.
