It has been quite a long time since the last Kingdom Hearts game, and although some players may be old hat, there has since been a need to jog our memories. There have been 2 main games and several prequel spinoffs housing new information in between the main ones. The first game was released back in 2002.
The last time we saw anything Kingdom Hearts related that wasn’t a “prequel” was in 2011. Kingdom Hearts Coded, the mobile phone game, came after the events of 2005’s Kingdom Hearts II.
There have been a huge number of plot changes to the initial narrative. This new game will actually advance the main story and bring Sora and his friends into new territory, so it’s kind of important to know what’s going on. If you’re jumping in without playing the other two very detail oriented, intricate and thorough (to say the least) games, you’re bound to get confused.
Now, the goal is to make it as easy as possible for players to follow along, and Square Enix has you covered. Square Enix director Tetsuya Nomura told VG247’s team that this refresher is high on his agenda when it comes to the highly awaited game.
“We have included several elements in Kingdom Hearts 3 to explain the story and get newcomers up to speed the minimum required level of understanding, including a series of videos to explain the story so far at the start of the game,” Nomura told the site. “I would be delighted if people who played Kingdom Hearts 3 took an interest in the series overall and went back to play the previous games as well.” Said Nomura.
This is great news. Lovers of the game will get a refresher, and get to to relive the games they’ve conquered in their past lives. The newcomers are aplenty, so for them, this will serve as a necessary step which will allow them to dive into the newest saga of the Kingdom Hearts adventure.
The official game synopsis describe sthe game as is as one which tells the story of the power of friendship and light vs. darkness, as Sora and his friends go on an action-filled adventure.
It is set in a vast array of Disney and Pixar worlds and follows Sora’s Journey.
Sora is an unknowing heir to a spectacular power and is joined by Donald Duck and Goofy to stop an evil force known as the Heartless from invading and overtaking the universe. Sora, Donald, and Goofy unite with iconic Disney-Pixar characters old and new to overcome tremendous challenges and persevere against the darkness threatening their worlds.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will be out on January 29th, 2019 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
