Kevin Smith: Why We Shouldn’t be Wary of Multiple Joker Movies

A lot of rumors are going around the DCU, especially now that Warner has another twig to its company that they’re calling DC Dark. It also means that we are definitely getting two Joker movies, one containing Jared Leto, who is a part of the DCU’s storyline following Justice League, Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, and one with Joaquin Phoenix called Joker.

Many people are concerned that there will be too much of the Joker on the screen; however, Kevin Smith disagrees. He said that we should be excited to see two Joker movies. Here is what he said on a panel at SDCC:

“When I was growing up, we had no Joker movies, and you were lucky if you got a Batman movie, and the Joker was usually in that. But think about it now, it’s a world full of comic book movies. We’ve seen all the big guns and all the main characters. Aquaman‘s coming down the pike this summer, that’s tremendous. But in that world, why not single out one of the most famous comic book villains, most famous bad guys of all time, the Joker?”

He has a good point, especially if you look back at the past DC Comics movies. If you look at the timeline of the films that came out, we go a few years where there wouldn’t be a superhero movie. We’ve had a few great years with the MCU going crazy with the amounts of films they released, and DC Comics is finally catching up to them. DC Dark was a good idea to start; it shows that they are listening to the fans for once, and hey, maybe one day we also get that Batman TV show we’ve been waiting for like years!

If you think that it will get boring to see the character so many times on screen, think of the comics you’ve read. The comics section is already doing this for years, using the same character in another context, storyline and so on, and does it get boring? No, not really, because DC Comics and even Marvel are doing this for years and it still has success.

“To me, it smells like a step in the right direction. They’ve taken a lot of crap for all the movies they’ve made so far not being as good as the Marvel movies, because they’ve been trying to make them in the Marvel method.”

DC is trying to make their own mark, and we can see this working for their future projects.

The origin movie called Joker will start production in September, while Birds Of Prey will begin at the beginning of 2019. Meanwhile, we already have films to look forward to like Aquaman and Shazam!

Are you excited to see all the Joker movies? Tell us why you are, or you aren’t in the comments below.
