UPDATE: A spokesperson for Warner Bros. issued the following statement in regards to the news, “We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally, we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.”
Henry Cavill is reportedly not returning to the DC cinematic universe as Superman according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter. Cavill has played the role of the Man of Steel in three of the studio’s films, including Man of Steel, Batman V. Superman, and Justice League, but sources say he will not be reprising the role in any future films.
DC is reportedly shifting its focus away from Superman and is looking to focus on a Supergirl origin story film. The studio is prioritizing the Supergirl film and would not be expected to even return to making a Superman solo film for several years. Plus, the studio is potentially looking to revamp the Superman character. A source told THR, “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.”
Cavill has already begun to move on from the Superman role. His performance in Mission: Impossible – Fallout has been praised by critics and fans alike. Cavill apparently plays a great villain. Additionally, it was confirmed earlier this month that Cavill will be playing the lead role in the upcoming Netflix series The Witcher, a role which he had his sights set on since earlier this year. Additionally, there has also been some noise in regards to Cavill advocating for the role of the iconic James Bond in the next 007 film.
As for Warner Bros and DC, a reset of a sort would undoubtedly be welcomed by fans. THR’s source has said that the studios are well aware of fan reactions to their films and have acknowledged issues which they are looking to fix. Their source says, “There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.” This could be accomplished with a universe reset.
It’s unclear what this news means for the future of the DC universe, however, Justice League stars Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller are said to all still be moving forward with their character’s solo film productions.
