Henry Cavill has been cast as the lead role in an upcoming series on Netflix based on the popular fantasy book saga, The Witcher. He will play Geralt Rivia.
The Witcher books are written by Polish writer, Andrzej Sapkowski. The eight books focus on a world in which “witchers” are able to hunt monsters with their developed supernatural abilities. They tell a tale of fantasy strong with themes of destiny and family. Cavill’s character Geralt is a monster hunter who struggles with the reality that the people around him are sometimes worse than the monsters he hunts. He encounters a princess with a secret and a sorceress. The three band together to figure out their destiny.
House of Cards‘ and Game of Thrones‘ Alik Sakharov will direct four episodes of the series. Alex Garcia Lopez (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s The Defenders) and Outlander‘s Charlotte Brändström will also comeon to direct a few episodes each.
Lauren Schmidt, who has worked on Marvel’s Daredevil and Marvel’s The Defenders will serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
Cavill has been open about his love for the the Witcher stories and video games. He is currently starring in Mission Impossible: Fallout is in theaters now. On a press tour for that film, which has earned over $600 million so far, he was asked what video games he’s been playing. Cavill has spoken about his love for World of Warcraft in the past. He responded, “The Witcher 3. I just replayed all the way through. Love that game. Really good game.”
He was then asked if he’d be interested in working on this project, which was announced last year. He said, “Absolutely. Yeah, that would be an amazing role.”
There is no word on if that interview perked up the ears of the producers to approach Cavill for the role, or if the deal had already been struck and that’s why he was playing the game. If it had, he was pretty brave to mention it with such a poker face.
Cavill is most known for playing Clark Kent/Superman in DC’s series of superhero films including Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. His next project will be Nomis with Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci.
