HBO Says ‘True Detective’ May Still Get a 3rd Season

When True Detective debuted in 2014 starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, it captivated audiences and critics alike.  Season 2 starring Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell wasn’t received quite as well and resulted in a struggle to sign a deal for a third season.

Recently, first season star McConaughey has said that he would be open to reprising his role for another season of the show.  While True Detective fans would love to see him step back into the role of Rust Cohle, that was just a fantasy due to the poor reception of season 2.  Recently, however, HBO executives have given new life into the hope of True Detective fans by saying that the show is not yet dead!

Casey Bloys, the new HBO programming Chief has confirmed that a 3rd season of the series is still on the table as a possibility with some changes of course. Bloys has hinted to the fact that showrunner Nic Pizzolatto could be moved to a new, more supervisory role on the show while giving the lead writing of the series to someone else.

At the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Saturday, Bloys had the following to say of True Detective:

“It is not dead.  I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”

Exciting news for anyone who loved the series from the start!  We would be able to forgive HBO for the second season as long as there is a bigger and better 3rd season in the works!
