HBO Boss Says ‘Game of Thrones’ Final Episodes are “Like Six Movies”
Excitement is building. We’ve seen glimpses of what’s to come in the eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones and now we’re starting to learn even more details about the upcoming finale season.
HBO chief Richard Plepler spoke with Variety as a post-Golden Globes event on Sunday where he told them that he’s seen rough cuts of the full final season. Not only has he seen the work in progress, but he says that each episode is like watching a feature film. Plepler said:
[row]“It’s a spectacle. The guys [David Benioff and DB Weiss] have done six movies. The reaction I had while watching them was, ‘I’m watching a movie. They knew the bar was high. They’ve exceeded the bar. I’ve watched them twice without any CGI and I’m in awe. Everybody’s in for an extraordinary treat of storytelling and of magical, magical production.”[/row]
That’s some pretty serious praise for Game of Thrones‘s final season. If Plepler is that impressed with the show without seeing any of the CGI, that must mean that the writing is on point, the acting is superb, and that it’s the iconic and epic conclusion that the Game of Thrones fans deserve. Additionally, though the eighth season will contain fewer episodes, there have been rumors that each episode will be super-sized in length. It would seem that Plepler’s comments might also indicate that the episodes in season eight will run longer than what we’ve seen in previous seasons.
While fans are still waiting on an official trailer, during the Golden Globes, HBO released a sizzle reel teasing their upcoming 2019 program. The reel offered a new look at the upcoming eighth season showing Sansa Stark (played by Sophie Turner) meeting Daenerys (played by Emilia Clarke) for the first time!
In addition to the eighth and final season, HBO is currently developing at least one of the potential Game of Thrones spinoff series. The spinoff series received a pilot order from the network giving fans comfort that, though Game of Thrones might be coming to an end, there is still more story to be told once the final chapter of the HBO series airs.
The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will air on HBO in April 2019. A formal premiere date has not yet been announced.
