‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Gets Pilot Order from HBO

While fans are anxiously waiting for any details regarding the upcoming 8th and final season of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, the network did deliver some exciting news in the past couple of days. On Friday, the network announced its decision to greenlight one of the possible Game of Thrones prequel series.

The prequel pilot will be written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) along with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. Goldman will also serve as showrunner as well as executive producer along with Martin. The current Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, will not be involved in the development of the prequel.

According to Deadline, the yet-to-be-titled prequel will be set thousands of years prior to the HBO series opening the doors for so many origin stories to be told! Deadline reports that the series is described as focusing on, “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Goldman’s prequel is one of five potential spinoff series (or, as Martin calls them “successor series”) which were in development. Back in January of this year, HBO programming president Casey Bloys teased an update on the potential new series by saying, “They’re moving along. We have some really talented writers working on them. The one thing I will tell you, which we talked about before, any sort of pilot-to-series [order], there’s not going to be anything on our air for a least a year after Game of Thrones airs. We’re not using the final season to launch a new show or anything like that. There’s going to be a separation between the two. These are among the best writers working and I’m hopeful.”

The epic conclusion of the Game of Thrones series is expected to air sometime in 2019. No formal premiere date has yet been announced.
