Gaming: ‘Friday the 13th’ will have you locking your doors at night! (with extra locks)

Good Morning, my fellow gamers! After Injustice 2 was released last month, I wasn’t exactly sure as to what would be the next game on my ‘to buy’ list. Sure, Tekken 7 looked pretty cool, but I wasn’t drawn out to immediately rush out to the store and buy it.

Last night, while trying to figure out exactly how to perfect my game play as Green Arrow in Injustice 2, a group of my friends and I were talking on Xbox Live. They were telling me about how excited they were to be playing the new Friday the 13th themed game. Eventually, they used my brother to finally coax me into buying it; and I am so glad that I did. HOWEVER, I will tell you this. Do not play this game alone. It is definitely a heart-pounding and thrilling game that will have you double checking your doors at night!

For those of you who are fans of the Friday the 13th series, or you just happen to love thrilling and suspenseful games, this one is definitely the one for you.

In the game, a party can hold up to 7 people. 6 people play as the Crystal Lake Camp Counselors. The 7th person, plays as the terrifying Jason. The ultimate goal of the game… is survive. The fun thing about this is, whoever gets to be Jason is randomly selected.

How the Game Works

So once you gather together your party, you have the choice to list yourselves as two characters that you would potentially like to play as. You pick a camp counselor you would like to be from the list of choices, and then for your second character you can either pick another camp counselor (but where is the fun in that??), or you can list Jason as your second character. The purpose for listing the two characters is so that when the game wants to decide who Jason is, it goes off of the list of people who listed him as one of their two characters.

Players are shown a brief video clip of Jason killing a camp counselor and then the game begins. Having played video games for many years, I’ve gotten so used to hearing people talking all the time during my game play. However, in this horror game, you can’t do that. You can only talk to someone if they are within a certain radius of you!

So essentially, if you are a camp counselor you are running around aimlessly, trying to find your fellow camp counselors and avoid Jason.

Now, you don’t have to HIDE the entire time (which I don’t think is a good idea anyway). You can search through the random buildings on camp and grab a weapon (be it a crowbar, axe, flare gun, etc.) so that way if Jason finds you or you decide to confront him, you have somewhat of an edge.

Another cool thing is, there is a car and a boat on the property which you can use to escape. WAIT, you didn’t think it would be that easy, did ya? You must search the buildings to look for the keys and gasoline (for the car) and the propeller and the gasoline (for the boat). Certain camp counselors have unique abilities. Some of the characters can run extremely fast, but their strength and stealth is a little low. Other characters are amazing at fighting, but if they try to run from Jason then they are in for a world of trouble.

Now if you are playing as Jason, then all the fun happens. You have the ability to ‘sense’ other players, especially if they are like my friend Rich and just try to hide in a house the entire time. A camp counselor can attempt to hide under a bed or in a closet, and avoid detection by holding ‘B’ which enables them to hold their breath for a few seconds. Jason also has the ability to teleport a short amount of distances making it easier for Jason to track his victims.

The longer you survive and the more achievements you unlock (i.e getting away from Jason, rendering him unconscious) the more ‘points’ you receive. Points earn you different abilities or skills. Same thing with Jason. The more kills you acquire the more points you get, and you can use those points to change your costume or buy more ‘killing styles’.

Let me tell you, some of these moves are pretty brutal. Some of Jason’s kill moves will have you cringing.

To Buy, or Not To Buy?

I’m a pretty big stickler when it comes to which games I choose to purchase. While yes, I am a horror movie fan, that is not the only reason as to why I love this game so much. It is so much more than just your basic one-on-one fighting game, and it definitely keeps you on your toes.

I would say if you’re looking for something very different to play, then you should absolutely go for it. It is currently available for PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC at a price of $39.99. It is SO worth it.

Sure there are a few flaws in the game (once in awhile it lags out) but other than that, it is truly a thrilling and adventurous story.

Can you imagine how cool this would be if it were available for VR?? Shiver me timbers!
