‘Game of Thrones’ Star Peter Dinklage Set to Star in ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ Film

Though the final season won’t premiere until sometime during the first half of 2019, the cast of HBO’s biggest hit series is already beginning to explore life after Game of Thrones.

On Friday, Variety reported that series star Peter Dinklage already has a new project in development for his life after Thrones. Sony is currently in the process of developing a film version of the classic fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin with Dinklage onboard not only to star in the film but to also produce. The production is said to still be very much in the development stage, so this would likely not be Dinklage’s first new project after Game of Thrones, however, according to Variety, the film is high on the priority scale for him and for Sony.

It’s too early for any details relating to additional casting or to the film’s plot to be released, however, Rumpelstiltskin’s fairy tale is quite well-known. The fairy tale was originally part of the collected works by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 and told the story of a miller, looking to avoid trouble, tells the King that his daughter can magically spin straw into gold. The King then locks the miller’s daughter up in a tower filled with straw to be spun by morning or she would face dire consequences. Clearly an impossible feat, the daughter gives up all hope until an imp (Rumpelstilkskin) appears the makes a deal with her that he will spin the straw into gold in exchange for her necklace. She accepts and the imp delivers the gold as promised. The imp and the daughter make several deals similar to this, each time upping the stakes and returns. Finally, the imp demands her first-born child unless she can guess his name, a detail he has never revealed to her. The daughter must find out the imp’s name or sacrifice losing her first-born child.

Dinklage would be playing the titular role of Rumpelstiltskin with a script written by Patrick Ness (Monster Calls) with Karen Rosenfelt, Circle of Confusion’s Matt Smith and David Alpert, David Ginsberg, and Josh Weinstock also producing.

Peter Dinklage recently broke an Emmys record when he was nominated for the seventh year in a row for his supporting actor role on Game of Thrones. The nomination made him the most nominated person ever within the category. If Dinklage wins the category at this year’s awards, he will be tied with Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul for the most wins within the category.
