‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Westworld’ Will Not Be At SDCC 2018

Two of HBO’s most popular series will be skipping San Diego Comic-Con this year. The network announced on Thursday that fan favorites Game of Thrones and Westworld will not be present at the 2018 convention.

According to Deadline, HBO released a statement regarding its decision which said the following:

[row]“Due to production schedules and air dates for Game of Thrones and Westworld, these series will not be presented at San Diego Comic-Con this summer. HBO has a longstanding relationship with SDCC, and we are very grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic response over the years. We look forward to returning in the future.” [/row]

The network’s decision makes total sense. With the eighth season of Game of Thrones still in production, it would be extremely difficult for the cast to sneak away from filming to make an appearance. Additionally, since the eighth season isn’t actually set to air until 2019, there isn’t a whole lot to promote in regards to the show. The timing and logistics for an appearance just don’t make sense.

The case is seemingly similar for Westworld. The series is just about to wrap up its second season and you can bet that a third season is still a ways off. There was an 18-month break between the first and second seasons of the series, so fans can bet on a similar timeframe in regards to the third season production.

HBO is not the only big name not appearing this year. Earlier this month, Marvel announced that they would not be hosting a Hall H presentation as well. Kevin Feige did assure fans that there will still be Marvel footage shared. He said, “We’re not going to Hall H this year. It will be an off year… which is what we did after Avengers 1 and what we’ve done every few years. There will be a tenth-anniversary presence at Comic-Con but [no Hall H panel.]”

The future, however, looks bright for future events. HBO has just announced that one of the potential Game of Thrones spinoff series received a pilot order from the network. If the pilot gets picked up to series, there will be plenty of news to share with fans in the not-so-distant future. There’s always hope for more Thrones and Westworld action next year!
