Dominic Monaghan Wasn’t Scared At All Filming THAT ‘Lost’ Scene
For those who have recently discovered Lost, I feel it is my duty to tell you that this article does contain spoilers for season 3 of the show. Read at your own risk or face Sawyer’s polar bear wrath.
If you’re a fan of TV in general, chances are you’ve heard of a little show called Lost.
If you haven’t heard of a little show called Lost, you’re probably very confused by this gif.
Lost followed a group of survivors from Oceanic Flight 815 who crashed on a mysterious (and very confusing) island. During their time they learn about the secrets they’re hiding from each other as well as the many secrets the island held.
It featured an all-star cast of Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lily, Josh Holloway, Terry O’Quinn, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Perrineau, Maggie Grace, and Henry Ian Cusick to name a few.
Each character brought something unique to the table, but in my opinion, no one grabbed my heart quite as quickly as the character Charlie, played by Dominic Monaghan.
And because Lost loved to screw with our emotions on a weekly basis, they took the character of Charlie away from us in the gut-wrenching season 3 finale “Through the Looking Glass”. For the record, I am still not over this.
In his final moments, before he sacrificed himself and drowned, Charlie was able to warn Desmond that the boat offshore was not Penny’s boat in what was one of the show’s most heartbreaking deaths.
Honestly, if Twitter were a bigger thing back in 2007, I’m convinced that #NotPennysBoat would have been trending for a month and would have been turned into an iconic meme.
Well, Monaghan recently sat down with EW for their “Couch Surfing” series and talked about what it was like filming that scene and how he wasn’t scared at all to be in the water.
“For me, it was just another day at work. I have a good relationship with water. I spend a lot of time in it. I swim, I scuba dive, I surf. It’s always been really kind to me, water. I don’t feel scared or intimidated.”
I think they were nervous saying ‘Are you going to be okay going under water? Do you need a safety diver?” “I was like ‘No, I’ll be fine.'”
So, it seems the silver lining here is that both Charlie and Dominic were at peace during the water scene. Some fans*, however, after 11 years, still have this sentiment:
*me.
You can “GO BACK!” and stream all seasons of Lost on Hulu!
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
