Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman and La La Land) have been tapped to add some new musical numbers to the film.
In addition to Smith, Mena Massoud will play the titular role, Naomi Scott will play Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari will play Jafar, and Navid Negahban will play the Sultan. The film also stars Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, and Numan Acar. Guy Ritchie is the director.
The original animated classic was released back in 1992 and featured the voice talents of Scott Weinger, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Gilbert Godfrey, and the late, great Robin Williams. The film quickly became a beloved Disney classic and is one of several films being transformed into live-action productions including Dumbo, Lilo and Stitch, Mulan and Lady and the Tramp.
Aladdin will ride his magic carpet into theaters on May 24, 2019.
